Crickets

There are a number of different varieties of crickets in Virginia. Many are brown, with short antennae, and grow to be an inch or less. They may be able to fly, but those who even can do not fly well. They are able to hop and will sometimes move in swarms in the late summer and early fall in Virginia.
House crickets can get into your house and damage your home's interior, such as curtains or carpets. They are opportunistic eaters, so they have no problem finding food within the warmth and safety of your home.
Male crickets will produce sounds, commonly called chirping or singing, by rubbing one wing on the other wing. They use this noise as a mating call to attract females.
