Acrobatics... but ants?

Are acrobat ants really acrobatic? Why are they called that and are they a danger to your home or loved ones?

Acrobat ants were actually named that for a reason. When they are disturbed, they will raise their abdomen up over the rest of the body, resembling an acrobatic trick. In addition to looking like circus performers, they can pose problems for your home. Find out more below.

What Do Acrobat Ants Look Like?

Acrobat ants are a typical 3-section ant bodied insect, but are specifically identifiable by their heart-shaped abdomen. There are several species of acrobat ants but all will raise their abdomen above their thorax and head when aggravated. Most acrobat ants are very small, measuring less than an 1/8th of an inch long.

Most acrobat ants are black to yellowish-brown, but can be multicolored (like having a reddish head like in the picture above). Acrobat ants have a stinger, six legs, and multi-segmented antennae.

They feed on honeydew excretions from other insects and will also eat live and dead insects. If they are inside your home, they'll be drawn to meat and sugary foods. These ants are most active between June and October.

Are Acrobat Ants A Problem?

While they aren't considered a health risk to humans, acrobat ants will bite or sting when they feel threatened. They can potentially spread germs and will spray a foul odor when killed or even when they are just disturbed.

More importantly, acrobat ants can actually be a threat to your home. These ants will strip the insulation from wires, including telephone and electrical wires. In so doing, acrobat ants can cause short circuiting and even fire hazards in your home.

Acrobat ants will also find damp or rotting wood to create larger cavities. Not only is an infestation a sign of possible water damage or leaks in your home, they can also cause further structural damage in such instances.

What Should I Do If I Have Acrobat Ants?

If you see acrobat ants in your home, act immediately. The presence of these ants can signify a much larger problem. Check for leaks and weakened wood due to water damage and address any problems immediately.

The best way to deal with an acrobat ant infestation is to contact a professional pest control company. In addition, make sure to stop leaks and address weak structural issues. Seal up entry points and clean up any enticing food, such as sugary spills. Be sure to check attics, vents and piping to be certain all gaps are sealed. Acrobat ants have a propensity to climb trees and enter houses through close-hanging branches.
